The relationship between digital twin and metaverse is illustrated by a 3 layer architecture consisting of physical layer, a link layer and a metaverse layer. All these layers and their sublayers are explained in this post.
You have already seen how digital twins are essential and is important for any metaverse in the previous post. This post will explain in detail the 3 layer architecture indicating the relationship between digital twin and metaverse.
3 LAYER ARCHITECTURE INDICATING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIGITAL TWIN AND METAVERSE
The relationship between digital twin and metaverse can be clearly understood from a 3 layer architecture. This architecture shows the relationship between the digital twin and metaverse.
There are 3 layers in this architecture to show the relationship between digital twin and metaverse. The layers are mentioned below.
- Physical real world layer
- User Interface or link layer
- Metaverse Layer
All the layers are sandwiched with each other. Link layer is the middle layer which takes requests from the physical layer to generate Digital Twin for the metaverse and stores it in the blockchain layer for further use.
The top most or last layer of this 3 layer architecture is the metaverse layer. This layer requests access for digital twins stored in blockchain sub layer in the link layer.
PHYSICAL REAL WORLD LAYER
Physical real world layer is the first layer of 3 layer architecture indicating the relationship between digital twin and metaverse. This layer contains mainly 3 components as listed below.
Users components indicate the users of metaverse in the real world. Things include all objects that can be converted to digital twins in the metaverse. Services components include the services provided by the things components. For example:- marketplaces, healthcare centers, shops, entertainment, etc.
Users and Things are converted to highly accurate digital twins in the metaverse. The whole world can be converted to a digital twin and this would be the biggest digital twin in the whole world.
The most popular application of digital twins is in the industry sector. Nvidia Omiverse is a set of tools and software for making digital twins. Digital Twins of the city is created for testing deployment of 6G towers and simulation of self-driving cars.
The biggest use of digital twins in the metaverse is the creation of avatars. Meta Humans and Trace Network Labs are such projects that create highly accurate avatars of you. It is motivating people who want the same real life personality of them in the metaverse. This is bringing a relationship between the digital twin and metaverse.
USER INTERFACE LAYER OR LINK LAYER
User interface layer or link layer is the 2nd layer or middle layer of 3 layer architecture indicating the relationship between digital twin and metaverse. It is the most critical layer of this architecture showing the relationship between digital twin and metaverse.
This layer contains 2 sub layers as listed below.
- Simulation or Migration Layer
- Blockchain Layer

SIMULATION OR MIGRATION LAYER
Simulation or Migration layer is the first sublayer of link layer or user interface layer. In this layer a digital twin of the physical real world layer is created. After creating the digital twin, it is submitted to the blockchain sub layer.
This sub layer has mainly 3 components as listed below.
- Simulators or Hardware
Service components contain services like NFT generator services. Popular NFT generator services examples are like Opensea, Rarible, Solsea, etc. This NFT generator service converts your digital twin to NFT in blockchain.
In addition the above components, hardware or simulators are present, that help you to make digital twins in the metaverse. 3D scanners are an example of simulators which create a digital avatar of you.
Programmers and Developers create the digital twin in the metaverse. They try to create highly accurate fully detailed digital twins. This creates a natural feeling of objects in the metaverse. SO, you can see the relationship between digital twin and metaverse
The digital twins created are submitted to this layer to be stored in blockchain and converted to Non-Fungible Token (NFT). Decentralized App (DApp) accesses this digital twin in metaverse for providing various funcationaly to the users of metaverse.
Blockchain sub layer of link layer is an metaverse infrastructure layer which contains various components. Some of the are listed below.

Blockchain is a distributed ledger database system where all the transactions are recorded. Users of the physical layer have access to blockchain and can submit new transactions or content such as digital twins. Moreover, they can read and use the submitted content.
METAVERSE LAYER OR DIGITAL WORLD LAYER
This is the last or top most layer of the of 3 layer architecture indicating the relationship between digital twin and metaverse. It is the most attractive layer and layer where user can feel and experience the metaverse.
Digital twins are used in this Layer by relying on blockchain and its related technology such as smart contracts, DAO , etc. All the components of the physical layer are digitized in this layer. Digital Twin is based in this layer including people avatars, business, retail markets.
All the physical layers are present in metaverse layers as Avatar, Onlinemarket, digital objects, digital world, etc. You can do everything as you do in the real world. There and many real life use cases of digital twins in the metaverse. So, there is a strong bond showing the relationship between the digital twin and metaverse.
DATA FLOW IN 3 LAYER ARCHITECTURE OF DIGITAL TWIN AND METAVERSE
Data flow or information flow is an important aspect to show the relationship between digital twin and metaverse. So, I decided to make it as a section in this post.
In this 3 layer architecture indicating the relationship between digital twin and metaverse, the data flow is unidirectional. The link layer requests data from the physical layer to generate a digital twin. The generated digital twins are stored in the blockchain sub-layer of the link layer.
The metaverse layers requests access to link layer to provide the digital twin stored in this layer to be used in this layer. The Link layer provides the data to this layer based on access from applications like DApps.
You have come to know that there is a well connected relationship between the digital twin and metaverse. A metaverse without digital twins is impossible and it would not exist.
